Working with other charities

We are always pleased to work with other organisations and charities that can support our Stars. One charity cannot support all children and different charities can support in a variety of ways.

Our eligibility criteria are based on the needs and condition of our potential stars, not on whether the are already members of another charity. We do not see that similar charities are a conflict of interest; it is all about providing support to our Stars, their families including siblings.

We do have criteria for allocation of our Oakley's Outings to ensure that we can allocate to the most appropriate Star.

Please use our contact form to get in touch if you have any questions about our Star referrals or if you are a charity or organisation that wishes to work alongside our charity.

CooP Members fund our Happy Boxes!

CooP members have helped to fund the Happy Box Project sending happiness to children and young adults supported by Share A Star through the CooP Local Community Fund. A fantastic  £3,287 has been raised for the project!

For the last 6 months every time CooP members bought Co?op branded products and services, from buying a loaf of bread to planning a funeral, 1% of their spend went to a local cause. We were accepted as one of the causes to fund the Happy Box Project.

A big thank you to all who chose the Happy Box Project from Share A Star as their preferred project.

We have forged links with a number of schools to raise awareness of our charity and raise funds. One such school is the Harris Primary Academy Shortlands. One of their teachers, Stacey Clarke put the London Marathon on her bucket list to do before she reached 40 and was lucky enough to get a place for this year's event! She is raising funds for two charities, Cancer Research and Share A Star. Please support Stacey to reach her target figure of £1,600. On the sixth day of Share a Star’s 12 Christmas Star campaign, we visited Rafael Star and his family. Rafael has spent over half of his young life in hospital. 9 weeks is the longest he’s remained out of hospital so far. They are praying for a hospital free Christmas. He remains on Total Parenteral Nutrition. They were so excited to see what we had for them, and his parents were overwhelmed at the kindness shown by strangers.

We wouldn’t have been able to do this without your incredible help and donations, thank you.

On the fifth day of Share a Star’s 12 Christmas Star campaign, we visited Malachi Star and his family. Malachi is a wonderful boy full of character! He has suffered a lot during his life, with having a brain tumour that has caused him to go blind. This doesn’t stop him in life but it does cause a lot of difficulties, that him, his brothers and sister have had to go through. Malachi is desperate for his sight back, but this isn’t possible and he struggles with this turmoil a lot. So we wanted to bring back the sparkle for him and his siblings and his parents. Some serious TLC was brought to them all.

We couldn’t have done this without your generosity and kindness you have all shown.

Thank you for all your donations.

IT issues hit referrals

We have identified an issue with our referrals submissions which has meant a number of referrals have not been processed as the team did not receive notification of the referral. We are really sorry and have started to contact people who have referred new Stars to us over recent months, no information has been lost. If you haven’t heard from us yet we should be in contact over the next few days. We have resolved the notification issue and normal service has been restored!

Untitled-7aAs a result of this follow-up we have received 7 new registrations in the last 24hrs! We are working on producing the Stars’ holding star and welcome pack.

Creative Partnership with Cards for Bravery

Share a Star is delighted to announce that we have started a creative partnership with the wonderful non-profit organisation, Cards for Bravery, to provide more hope to seriously ill youngsters and their siblings.

Cards for Bravery is wonderful idea of sending a handmade card to someone seriously ill. It contains a positive message of hope for that person and helps bring light to their day. Katie, who is only 14 years old, has currently sent 1400 cards to seriously ill people across the UK, whilst being seriously unwell herself. She is a massive inspiration and we want to spread that light to other sufferers.

Jessica and Katie, are going to be working together to create a completely unique project. More details will be released when we have come up with a cunning plan but for now, we will be sending out special bravery cards to the seriously ill youngsters we look after. It looks like Jessica has her work cut out!

To find out more about Cards for Bravery, check out their website: www.cardsforbravery.com

Wedding Plans Overtake Parliament!

Plans to publicise Jessica’s recent trip to Parliament in the local press has caused her wedding plans to become a local (and maybe) national story.

Jessica published a press release highlighting the recent visit to see local MP Kelly Tolhurst to raise awareness of Share A Star and research into ME. Whilst the visit got a mention the local newspaper honed in on the fact that Jessica’s fiancé, Samuel accompanied her to parliament – and that meant a wedding story! The BBC picked up on the news and sent a team round on Friday afternoon and an item was aired on BBC South East Today.

See the article here:

Medway Messenger July2016 1

Samuel is enjoying his moment of fame and has been recognised in the street already!

Share a Star went to Parliament

On the 14th of June 2016, Share a Star was given the amazing opportunity to go to The Houses of Parliament to speak with local MP Kelly Tolhurst, about the charity and severe M.E. (Myalgic Encephomyelitis). Jessica had been invited having won a Points of Light award and raising the issue of needed additional funding for paediatric brain tumours. This subject is very close to Share a Star, owing to the huge numbers of our Stars who suffer with brain tumours or have sadly passed away as a result.

We were able to discuss the function of Share a Star and how we could increase our support of these inspirational, seriously unwell young people and their families.

Kelly was amazed with the work that we do, especially as most of it is achieved from ‘The World of One Room’! She expressed her interest in getting involved and supporting Share a Star, in order to enable us to continue and increase the help that we can offer to the seriously unwell children and their whole families.

The campaign #MillionsMissing, referring to the millions of people who are missing from everyday life and the workplace due to severe M.E., was also raised. The impact of all types of M.E. on a person were discussed and Kelly agreed that the condition needed more recognition, understanding and funding.

A Background on Share a Star

Share a Star is a registered charity (charity number 1157517) that aims to recognise seriously unwell young people and their families as the special stars that they are. We are unique in that we provide support for the entire families, including the siblings, who are often forgotten. The support that we provide takes several different forms: from creating a unique ‘Holding Star’ for each unwell youngster, sending out ‘Happy Boxes’ full of surprises to bring a smile to giving special trips to the families through our latest venture Oakley’s Outings. If a Star does unfortunately pass away, Share a Star has a bereavement support project called ‘Forever a Star’.

The charity was founded by Jessica Taylor, whilst being desperately unwell in hospital with severe M.E. and subsequent osteoporosis. She continues to run the charity from her bed in her ‘World of One Room’.

Forever a Star Lucy D

We are devastated to have to say that our wonderful Lucy D Star passed away after a long and arduous battle with ill health. She fought valiantly like a warrior princess, like the true superstar that she always was, but after fighting Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, a liver transplant and other complications, she grew her angel wings surrounded by her family at home. She fought ’til the very end.

She has now become one of our ‘Forever Stars’ and her family will continue to be looked after by Share a Star.

‘Love like Starlight never dies.’
